A brief history of 50 years of warm hospitality.
First established as the 1073rd Holiday Inn property globally, the hotel grew along with the local tourism landscape, as Singapore’s then budding industry blossomed into the iconic destination that it has become today. From its roots in 1974 as the Holiday Inn, the hotel evolved and grew from strength to strength, transitioning in 1980 to become Holiday Inn Singapore and in 1985 to Royal Holiday Inn; In 1990, to become the Royal Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza, and in 1997, to become Singapore Royal Crowne Plaza Singapore. At the turn of the millennium in 1999, the hotel rebranded once more, emerging as Royal Plaza on Scotts Singapore.
Over the last 5 decades, Royal Plaza on Scotts has been a trailblazer in the industry.
Some of the initiatives that Royal Plaza on Scotts has taken includes:
1. First hotel in Singapore to be 100% smoke-free
This ensures that our guests, both smokers and non-smokers, will have a pleasant stay.
2. First hotel in Singapore to offer complimentary mini-bar in all rooms

3. First hotel to provide guests with free WIFI

To commemorate these ‘industry firsts’ as part of the anniversary celebrations, three specially curated photo spots will be set up around the hotel, comprising of installations that depict these service milestones. Guests and public are encouraged to explore each photospot and interact with the installations and share their experience at Royal Plaza to their social media platforms to win hotel stays and dining experiences.
The new 15-storey Holiday Inn Hotel Singapore is the first Holiday Inn property in Asia, and the 1073rd Holiday Inn property to be built in the world.

Our room rate was S$60 per night and salaries started at S$150 back in 1973!
In 1983, Holiday Inn Hotel Singapore was renamed to Royal Holiday Inn.
Fun Fact
Royal Holiday Inn was a popular hotel back in the days with several accolades to its name. One of the award we received in 1985 was for superior ratings on guest comments, as well as having the least amount of complaints per thousand room nights sold.
In the 90s, we have undergone a few name change. From Royal Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza Singapore in 1990 to Royal Crowne Plaza Singapore in 1997 and finally to the independent hotel we are known today, Royal Plaza on Scotts in 1999.
The hotel underwent a major renovation in 2006 and reopened with a modern branding in 2007.
